In 1953, Mercury shared the Lincoln look, but its shorter wheelbase and more compact proportions made Mercury’s package a foot smaller than the Lincoln. Mechanically, 1953 marked the final year of the flathead V8, one of the most successful and famous internal combustion engines ever created. The Monterey convertible neatly bridged the gap between the modest Ford and the big, luxurious Lincoln, and its 125-horsepower V8 gave excellent performance while its luxurious trimmings clearly appealed to a more demanding and affluent buyer. Available only in the upscale Monterey series, just 8,463 were built, representing less than three percent of total Mercury production for 1953. Today, surviving examples are quite rare, with very strong collector interest.

This beautifully restored and highly detailed example hails from British Columbia. Fitted with a Merc-O-Matic transmission, it is very well equipped with a leather interior and options including power steering, power brakes, power windows, a power top, a radio, and a clock. Other features include back-up lights, running lights, a trunk light, an emergency brake indicator light, and windshield washers. There is no more recognizable sound in the automotive world than a flathead Mercury running dual exhausts – a sound that is perfectly enhanced by this very fine convertible. It is an icon of popular culture, even to the generations that followed.
