In 1971, the iconic 350SL was introduced, which was the designed by Bruno Sacco, who also designed the S-Class sedans of the 1970s. The new SL, known internally as Type R107, was larger and more rounded in style than its predecessor, featuring steel body panels and a plusher interior. The majority of cars were destined for the important North American market, fitted with a 4.5-litre V8 engine coupled to a three-speed automatic transmission. Most notably, the new SL provided more predictable handling, thanks to their rear swing axles, which were altered to function as semi-trailing arms. In keeping with Mercedes-Benz tradition, the cars were constantly updated, refined and improved, remaining in production for nearly 20 years, culminating in the 560SL, which was powered by a sophisticated 5.5-litre V8 engine with 238 horsepower, with a four-speed automatic transmission.

The 1989 Mercedes 560SL Roadster offered here is a wonderful example of the final year of R107 production, and it remains in pristine, original condition, having traveled just over 10,000 original miles from new. Retaining its original white exterior finish, the 560SL is complemented by both hard and soft tops, alloy wheels, and Michelin radial tires. This “time capsule” vehicle is reported to have never seen rain, and is further complemented by an impeccable tan leather interior with matching carpeting, and all the expected power and convenience amenities. The engine and underhood area are equally clean, correct, and impressive in their presentation, and an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer serviced the car less than 1,000 miles ago. This beautiful, low-mileage 560SL is ready to provide a stylish open-air driving experience for its next owner, and it will be a strong contender for top honors at selected shows and concours events as well.
