In the 1970s, Porsche dedicated much of its racing efforts to sports car endurance competition. The slant-nosed 935 fit the new FIA “Silhouette” formula and went on to dominate the World Manufacturer’s Championship. As a result, by the mid-1980s, Porsche’s ‘Sonderwünsche’(Special Wish) department was busy fitting customers’ Turbo models with a ‘Flachbau’ or flat-profile nose, flip-up headlamps, wide rear wheel arches, and forward-facing air scoops, all reminiscent of the mighty 935. For 1987, the ‘slant-nose’ package became available as a factory option, and by 1988, the Turbo version was simply called the 930S. Built alongside the revolutionary 959, only 278 slant-nosed 930 Turbos were assembled during 1988, and very few of them reached North America.
This impeccable 1988 930S was originally fitted with the desirable “slant-nose” option.
It has traveled just 49,300 original kilometers, and is offered with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, as well as its complete service history including invoices and stamped service books. The car displays a very attractive black finish, enhanced by a “whale tail” rear spoiler, five-spoke alloy wheels, and high-performance radial tires. The functional yet attractive interior is enhanced by the “extended leather” option, with tan hides and matching carpeting. In addition, the car features amenities including air conditioning, eight-way power seats, and an AM/FM/CD stereo. The car has also received a series of “RUF” performance upgrades, including twin-plug cylinder heads, a stainless-steel exhaust, “RUF” gauges, and a lower chin spoiler.
This incredible 1988 Porsche 930S remains in excellent overall condition, and truly captures the ‘Rennsport’ spirit. Writing for Car and Driver, Brock Yates once remarked, “it [assures] you of the most potent dose ever of the Porsche essence: fearsome speed and thoroughbred sounds in a back-road dance partner that you will never forget.” We couldn’t agree more.
