The original “Mini Cooper” was produced from 1961 to 1971, and again from 1990 to 2000. Earlier cars were built by British Motor Corp and Rover Group with BMW taking over production in 1994. John Cooper, owner of the Cooper Car Company and designer and builder of Formula One and Competition Rally cars, saw the potential of the original Mini, and worked with Issigonis; the original designer.
In 1996, A 35th Anniversary Edition of the Mini Cooper was designed and commissioned with limited production. A total of 200 motorcars were built for the UK market (5 of which received John Cooper Garages S specification) 1501 were manufactured for Japan, the first (used in Rover’s Japanese launch brochure) remained in the UK.
Special features exclusive to the 35th Anniversary Edition include porcelain green full-leather interior, piping in seats, wood inlay dash board, leather three spoke sport steering wheel, body colour door trim and wheel arches, 35th Anniversary badging, cream-faced gauges and Minilite aluminum wheels.
This 1997 Mini Cooper 35th Anniversary Edition Coupe is 1-of-1501 Japanese models built during entire production. It is powered by the original 1,275cc larger displacement engine and five speed manual transmission.
