While the Dodge Super Bee was a sales success among Mopar enthusiasts, die-hard performance fans, they lobbied for another engine package to round out the car, which was initially offered with the 335 horsepower, 383 cubic inch engine, or the top-of-the-line 426 Hemi. In response, the A12 package was introduced after the launch of the 1969 models, resulting in the 1969 ½ Super Bee. A $468 option over the 383-equipped Super Bee, the A12 package included a 440 cubic inch V8 engine topped with a special Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold mounting three Holley 2-barrel carburetors. In addition, the option provided a heavy-duty suspension, as well as heavy-duty brakes, transmission and rear axle. The flat black fiberglass lift-off hood was fastened by four NASCAR-style hold-down pins, and was topped with a massive and menacing air scoop. A set of heavy-duty 15″ police car wheels, finished in black, rounded out the “no nonsense” look of the car. A total of 420 coupes were produced, and only 267 were equipped with a four-speed manual transmission. The A12-equipped Super Bee was rated at an advertised 390 horsepower, and it is widely regarded as one the quickest and fastest muscle cars of the era.
This original Super Bee was produced on April 26 1969, and it is finished in its original colors of Hemi orange with a black interior. Showing just 22,500 miles, which are believed to be original, the 440 6-Pack engine and 4-speed transmission are both matching numbers, and the car retains all of its original sheet metal. This car has been professionally authenticated, and comes complete with a documentation binder including two Galen Govier visual inspection reports, a Chrysler Registry listing, fender tag decoding, as well as its Owner’s Manual and a file of past receipts. Also included is a DVD of this car’s participation in a 2007 “Muscle Car Shootout” on Speed TV’s Dream Car Garage. This is truly a rare opportunity to purchase a well-restored and fully authenticated example of one of the rarest and fastest muscle cars ever produced.
