Win, win win!! Everything about this car means winner! Starting with the fabulous Ford Mustang which completely turned the auto market upside down setting sales records which stand to this day. Then you have to talk about Ford’s commitment to motorsports. Ford called it “Total Performance” and it wasn’t just an ad campaign, if there was a race, like as not there was a Ford in the winners circle and Trans Am was no exception.
SCCA rules dictated an engine displacement no more than 302 cubic inches and a minimum number be sold to the public. Creating a high winding 302 cube powerplant with big port heads and making it durable enough to go the distance was easy enough for the Total Performance engineers at Ford. Creating an exciting version of the Mustang to house this winning engine fell to the styling genius of Larry Shinoda who came up with the name and the stripe. To this day the Boss 302 Mustang is a legend and a standout.
The yellow example offered here was equipped new with all of the standard Boss equipment such as the special 302 V8, four speed close ratio transmission, power front disc brakes, quick ratio steering, competition suspension and functional front spoiler. It was also sold with options like the bright yellow paint, rear deck spoiler, a 3.91 Traction-Lok differential, the Sports Slats rear window louvers, console, convenience group, power steering, and tachometer. Notably, the cylinder heads have been rebuilt by Jack Roush Performance Engineering. It is also documented by a Marti Report and comes with the original Ford shipping invoice from the assembly plant. This car has been appraised at $80,000. The Marti Report indicates the car was built October 1, 1969 which was two days behind schedule. With the wild popularity of the Mustang it’s little surprise Ford was going full bore to keep up with demand but you can also bet it was probably the last time this Boss 302 was late for anything. Also, make no mistake, legend stature and Mustang popularity aside the Boss 302 was still a limited production special edition to homologate the car for racing. Just over 7000 were produced and far fewer remain today. This is a seldom seen chance to own a piece of the Trans Am winning Mustang excitement affordably, and secure in the knowledge that your investment can only go up. A winner!
