One of the most exciting ponycars to be offered to the public, this 1971 Dodge Challenger RT comes to auction and it is a car you don’t want to miss. For ’71, Dodge wisely chose to keep changes to a minimum for Challenger after the success of its debut the year before. With the most visible of these changes being a slight update to the grille and taillights, there are many who will argue the 1971 was the best looking version of the car.
This Challenger, imported from California in March of 2019, is a genuine RT which has been refinished in the attention grabbing and desirable Panther Pink. Although this example did not come off the assembly line in this colour, it has been refinished in the correct shade of one of Chrysler’s optional Hi-Impact colours. The body panels are straight with gaps that are even and chrome that is bright and unblemished. Blackout hood treatment, black RT side stripe and a black T/A style ducktail spoiler provide the ideal amount of contrast to the gleaming paint.
Sliding into the high back bucket seats, the driver is greeted by a full set of gauges to monitor the big V8 under the hood. The iconic Pistol Grip shifter rises from the center console and makes gear changing a joy. Gripping the Tuff Wheel it’s easy to feel the pull of the open highway.
The drivetrain benefits from the addition of a 440 Magnum V8 with four speed manual transmission. Turning the key, the bigblock powerplant starts easily and settles into an idle with just the right amount of exhaust note to let you know this pony has horses but smooth enough to ensure it can still be driven with ease. The throaty rumble coming from the chrome plated quad exhaust tips lends an authority to the sound. Letting out the clutch and moving the Pistol Grip through the gears will bring a smile to any driver. The car accelerates smoothly and quickly while the power brakes bring it to a sure stop. The white letter radial tires on Rallye Wheels respond to the drivers command without giving a ride that is harsh or noisy.
In short, this is an investment grade collectible that is a fantastic driving car for the buyer who wants to use their purchase but it is also a great choice for the show goer who takes pride in a car that gets noticed. This is an opportunity not to be missed.
