One of the things that separates a good car from a great car is quality. Many cars have shiny paint, but is the body laser straight? Many cars have nice interiors, but is the upholstery professionally stitched using correct leather hides? Many cars have nice brightwork, but have the stainless moldings been carefully machine-polished to a show-quality luster? The Deluxe Convertible offered here exhibits all the above characteristics and more. After making sure the body was free of imperfections and arrow straight, the craftsmen who restored this great automobile applied several coats of the correct shade of Cloudmist Gray, then spent countless hours wet-sanding and polishing the paint to a mirror finish. Even the floor pans under the car were refinished in body colour in the course of a no-expense-spared body-off restoration. The interior received the same painstaking attention with beautifully wood-grained dash and garnish moldings, correct LeBaron-Bonney leather upholstery, fully restored gauges and right down to the date-coded glass. The convertible top has a small scuff mark on the drivers side (pictured). Upon very close examination, there is evidence of some fine hairline cracks in the steering wheel (pictured). A road test of this fine example confirms that much attention has been given to the mechanical components as well, resulting in a smooth ride with no vibrations and a low-revving flathead engine even at 70 mph thanks to the optional Columbia 2-Speed rear axle. 1939 was the first year for hydraulic brakes and the last year that Ford produced a rumble seat, and this example comes with wing windows, factory radio, heater, banjo steering wheel, spider hubcaps, Haartz cloth top, wide whitewall tires, Ford accessory locking gas cap, fog lamps, stainless exhaust deflector, dual mirrors and the aforementioned Columbia 2-Speed rear axle.
