The word Volkswagen means “People’s Car” in German and was a concept developed to create a car that was affordable and practical enough for common people to own. In the early 30’s, few Germans could afford anything more than a motorcycle and only one in 50 Germans owned a car. In 1934, Ferdinand Porsche was given the order to develop a car that could carry 2 adults and 3 children at 62 mph and the engine had to be powerful enough for sustained cruising on Germany’s Autobahn. The car was manufactured in huge numbers from 1938 until 2003, and on February 17, 1972, the Beetle’s production number reached 15,007,034 and surpassed the Ford Model T as the all-time record holder for cars produced. On July 30, 2003, the final original Type 1 Beetle rolled off the assembly line, 65 years after its original launch, with a total of 21,529,464 units built during that time.
Because these Beetles were produced in such vast numbers, parts were readily available and the cars driven, and driven, and driven some more. As a result, pristine examples are not that readily available, and that’s what makes this example so special. Purchased by the late David Bennett, who had an eye for quality, it is one of the rare examples that has been well cared-for, and would be an excellent choice for anyone considering to acquire a vintage Beetle. Documents that go with the sale of this car include the VW pouch containing the original owner’s manual, Blaupunkt radio manual & warranty card as well as a written appraisal with a valuation of $19,000. The car is powered by the larger version 1,500cc engine which was introduced in ’67, coupled to a 4-speed manual transmission. The original Blaupunkt radio is still in the dash and the car is fitted with optional backup lamps. This is also the first year for the 12 volt electrical system, dual-circuit brake system, drivers arm rest, 2-speed wipers and door lock buttons on both doors. It should be noted that although the paint has a wonderful overall appearance, there are various minor chips and imperfections present only visible upon close inspection. Also upon closer inspection, the chrome does show some minor signs of aging but still retains a very good overall appearance. Selling to the highest bidder at NO RESERVE!!!
