Very well maintained Series III Excalibur with just 29,500 actual miles! Outstanding finish in Metallic Maroon and Caitlin White, and excellent deep maroon leather bucket seats. Well equipped with options that include ice cold air conditioning, power 4-wheel disc brakes, Chevrolet powered 454 cid V8 power steering, cruise control, removable hardtop, side curtains, highly chromed detail.
Created by industrial designer, Brook Stevens, who was responsible for innovations spanning some 60 years! With his automobile passion and career with Studebaker, he designed his own vehicle along with his two sons in the early 1960’s, and later established Excalibur Automobile Corp located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. These beautifully crafted cars are completely factory made of hand-laid fiberglass that was twice the thickness of a Corvette making them extra strong, with aluminum hood panels. Using only new components, modern drive train & chassis, and styling borrowed from the rare Mercedes SSK, these cars were an instant success.
These Series III examples are designed on a well designed and factory fabricated sport chassis providing 4-wheel independent suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes. Power comes from its factory-appointed Chevrolet 454ci high-output V8 engine, turbo-hydramatic 400 automatic transmission, and 2.73 posi-traction rear end. With these Chevrolet Corvette under pinnings this car performs and handles very well. The feather list is quite long for this impressive car. They include ice cold air conditioning and defrost heat, power steering, power brakes, leather wrapped Moto-Lita steering wheel, full VDO instrumentation, reclining front seats, cruise control, tilt/telescopic steering column, rear mounted trunk, dual side mounts with hard covers, running boards, 15” chrome true wire spoke wheels wrapped in near new radials with white wall AM/FM radio, Plexiglas wind wings, driving lamps, large chrome headlight surrounds, air horns, and functional stainless steel side-exit dual exhaust!
This Series III Excalibur has travelled just 29,500 total miles. Complete with the original removable hard to with soft cover, side curtains, and formal tonneau mooring cover in matching maroon. All VDO dash gauges re functions aside from the dash clock which is currently not functioning. This example was sold new in Kitchener Waterloo region and has stayed in southern Ontario amongst significant collectors and collections all of its existence.
Paint is excellent having been refurbished once by well know high quality restoration facility in Ontario. Chrome all shows excellent including the six true wire wheels. Interior is all original and in excellent overall condition. Drivers seat shows expected patina of high quality leather and current mileage.
These are a unique vehicle that have a great folowing amongst many enthusiast including celebreties, musicians, and actors. The Excalibur’s performance and over-the-top retro-classic look attracted high-profile owners, among them Steve McQueen, Ronald Reagan, Dean Martin, Tony Curtis, Liberace, Sonny and Cher, Prince Rainer, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gearge Foreman to mention a few.
With limited production and with many of the Excaliburs amassed in private collections the opportunity to secure an excellent original example is becoming more difficult. Here lies an opportunity………
