This fantastic 1968 Camaro RS Z28 is one of those special cars that make collectors take notice. Unlike many, it is numbers matching 302 engine and M21 four speed transmission. The 12 bolt Posi rear axle with 3.73 ratio is date coded to February 22 which would correctly precede vehicle assembly. It has the 15 inch Rally wheels with power front disc brakes which were mandatory with the Z28. A Z28 such as this does not come along every day.

When Chevrolet introduced option package RPO Z28 on the Camaro in its first year, they had no idea of the legend they were about to unleash. Fans were quick to pick up on the special package and began referring to any Camaro with the option as a ‘Z28’. Near the end of the 1968 production run Chevrolet began replacing the 302 emblem with a Z28 badge on the fender of cars so equipped and by the next year, it would become a distinct model.
This fantastic 1968 Camaro RS Z28 is one of those special cars beginning with the RS package. An appearance option that consisted most visibly of backup lights below the rear bumper and the hidden headlight covers in the grille as well as a special gas cap and badging. The headlight covers alone dramatically changed the look of the Camaro and when combined with the other special trim, it made an already exciting car just that much more of an attention getter.
The heart of a Z28 is the high revving 302 smallblock V8 with its big valves and high flowing heads. Unlike so many, this Camaro is numbers matching with the original engine still in place. The carburetor is the correct part with a date code before engine and vehicle assembly as it should. The heads are the correct castings with a date code for February 22, 1968. A correct and date coded distributor remains in place. The proper intake is in place with the unique curved thermostat housing and chrome oil filler tube.
It can also boast of retaining the numbers matching M21 close ratio four speed Muncie transmission. Furthermore, the proper 12 bolt Posi-Traction rear axle with 3.73 ratio and date coded to February 22 which would correctly precede the vehicle assembly date. It has the 15 inch Rally wheels with power front disc brakes which were a mandatory option when the Z28 was specified.
The cowl trim tag indicates this car was assembled the first week of March in 1968 at the Norwood, Ohio assembly plant. It also shows it to be originally equipped with a black bucket seat interior and an outer finish of the seldom seen Corvette Bronze.
This Camaro RS/Z28 starts with authority and runs out as a true high performance V8 engine should. The Muncie four speed shifts easily and driving the car in regular traffic is accomplished without stress. The suspension is taut and handling is precise while stops are made with the willing assistance of the power disc/drum brakes.
A good running, well preserved Z28 such as this does not come along every day and when the RS is added, it becomes a highly desired and very collectible investment musclecar that should not be ignored.
